Durham Law Society provides prospective solicitors and barristers with focused careers advice and opportunities from a wide variety of sources. We have strong relationships with a range of law firms, with whom we provide events such as skills and interview workshops, open days and addresses.
Welcome to the Law Society, one of the oldest and most popular societies in Durham!
The Law Society is open to all Law students, as well as those from other disciplines interested in a legal career, and aims to provide members with careers and social events at the best possible value for money.
This year we’re aiming to be bigger and better than ever. We have all the usual popular social events such as Freshers’ Dinner, Norton Rose rugby tournament, the Law Ball and Jones Day bar crawl! As well as this, we have a number of human rights related events, including an address by ex-Guantanamo Bay detainee Moazzam Begg. We’ll also be doing our best to provide you with the careers advice you need to make an informed decision about what you want to do after Durham, through careers workshops and open days.
Join our Facebook group in order to keep updated on our latest news and events!
Join the Society by contacting Rose, our Treasurer.
Best Wishes,
Chris Norman - President 2010/11
Stephanie Mitchell - Vice-President 2010/11
Membership is £49 for life or £30 for 1 year. This represents incredible value for money as most of the social events are free and other events are substantially subsidised. Contact Rose Jakeman (rose.jakeman@durham.ac.uk) for further details.
Aimed primarily at Law students, but open to those from all disciplines, the Society provides prospective solicitors and barristers with focused careers advice and opportunities from a wide variety of sources. We have a strong relationship with a range of law firms, and provide members with the chance to meet representatives from such firms in a relaxed and informative setting, through events such as skills and interview workshops, open days and addresses. For members interested in life at the Bar, events held last year included talks by current BVC students, a trip to the annual Universities’ Day and Dinner at Lincoln’s Inn and a trip to BPP Law School. For those interested in non-legal careers, there is guidance from the Careers Service, and this year we are looking to provide more information on such careers.
The Law Society is also renowned throughout the university for its social events and also organises these throughout the year as an opportunity for members of the Society to make new friends and interact in a social environment. Members always receive discounted entry price and offers to such events, making membership excellent value for money. We annually hold the Freshers’ Dinner, Norton Rose Rugby Tournament, The Winter Ball, Summer Drinks and many bar crawls throughout the year, including the legendary Jones Day Bar Crawl. These events provide a fantastic way to make new friends outside of your college.
Looking to the future, we aim to establish new and long-term schemes so that alumni who have benefited from our support can in turn offer advice to existing members within the university. This year we are also committed to strengthening links between the Law Department and Society, by inviting staff to our events. Last year we held a number of human rights related events, trips and speeches, and wish to consolidate our commitment to raising awareness of current legal issues through a programme of events including an address by ex-Guantanamo Bay detainee Moazzam Begg.
